The Punjab Cabinet has approved a major expansion of green public transport as the provincial government steps up efforts to reduce pollution, modernise travel and make commuting more affordable.
The decision was taken during a cabinet meeting, following the successful rollout of Punjab’s first electric bus service. After covering all districts, the government has now decided to extend green bus services to the tehsil level, significantly widening access to eco-friendly transport.
To strengthen the network, authorities have approved the procurement of 1,000 electric green buses. Officials said the expanded fleet will help reduce traffic congestion, cut fuel costs and lower harmful emissions, particularly in densely populated urban and semi-urban areas.
As part of the modernisation drive, a cashless payment system will be introduced on all electric buses starting March 25. Passengers will be able to pay fares using T-Cash cards or bank cards, while those opting to pay in cash will be charged higher fares. The move is aimed at encouraging digital payments and ensuring faster, more transparent fare collection.

Officials said the green transport initiative aligns with Punjab’s broader environmental and urban development goals. Electric buses are expected to provide quieter, cleaner and more reliable travel options for daily commuters, including students, workers and senior citizens.
The government believes that expanding electric bus services beyond major cities will help bridge transport gaps in smaller towns and tehsils, improving connectivity and economic activity.
Authorities added that the project reflects Punjab’s commitment to sustainable development and climate-friendly policies, while also offering citizens a modern and affordable alternative to private transport.
