The National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (Nepra) has approved a slight reduction in electricity prices by finalising the national average power tariff for the year 2026, offering modest relief to consumers across the country.
According to the decision, Nepra has set the national average electricity rate for 2026 at Rs33.38 per unit. This represents a reduction of 62 paisas compared to the previously approved rate of Rs34 per unit for the fiscal year 2025–26. While the decrease is small, it signals a rare downward adjustment in power tariffs amid ongoing concerns over rising energy costs.
In addition to revising the tariff, Nepra has also approved the overall revenue requirement for power distribution companies (Discos) for the year 2026. The total revenue requirement has been estimated at Rs3,379 billion, reflecting the financial needs of the power distribution sector.

Out of this amount, Rs2,923 billion has been allocated for the purchase of electricity from power producers. Meanwhile, Rs456.15 billion will cover the operational expenses of distribution companies, including staff costs, maintenance, allowed profit margins, and financial adjustments related to previous years.
Officials say the approved figures aim to balance consumer affordability with the financial sustainability of the power sector, which has long struggled with inefficiencies, losses, and circular debt.
