The Punjab government has taken a major step toward modernising public transport by launching a cashless payment system for its Green Bus service, while also expanding routes from districts to tehsil levels across the province.
Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz announced that commuters will be able to pay fares digitally on Green Buses starting from March 25, 2026. Alongside this move, she revealed plans to introduce 1,000 new electric Green Buses to strengthen the eco-friendly transport network and improve daily commuting for thousands of passengers.
Officials said the initiative is designed to make public transport faster, safer, and more convenient by eliminating the need for cash handling. Digital payments are expected to reduce delays at stops, improve transparency, and enhance the overall travel experience for commuters.
The expansion of Green Bus routes to tehsil-level areas is seen as a significant development, especially for residents of smaller towns who rely heavily on public transport. Authorities believe this will ease traffic congestion on major roads by encouraging more people to shift from private vehicles to public transport.

The Green Bus project also aligns with Punjab’s broader vision of promoting sustainable and low-emission travel. Electric buses produce significantly less pollution compared to traditional fuel-based vehicles, helping improve air quality in urban and semi-urban areas.
Officials added that the government is committed to using technology-driven solutions to upgrade infrastructure and public services. With cashless payments and an expanded electric bus fleet, Punjab aims to set a new standard for modern, environmentally responsible public transport in Pakistan.
