Sardar Akhtar Mengal’s resignation from national assembly approved after more than a year, marking a major political development in Balochistan.

The National Assembly has officially approved the resignation of Sardar Akhtar Mengal, chairman of the Balochistan National Party (Mengal), ending his tenure as a lawmaker. The resignation was accepted by National Assembly Speaker Sardar Ayaz Sadiq.

Mengal had submitted his resignation on September 3, 2024, citing the government’s failure to address his demands amid the province’s political challenges. He stated that the decision was taken after repeated assurances from the federal government regarding the rights and development of Balochistan’s people were ignored.

Elected in the general elections held on February 8, 2024, Mengal won from NA-256, Khuzdar, representing the aspirations of the people of Balochistan. His parliamentary role was expected to strengthen the province’s voice at the national level, but he claimed the government’s lack of attention to his and his party’s demands hampered this objective.

Speaker Sardar Ayaz Sadiq had delayed approval of the resignation for almost one year and five months, a move that drew political commentary and speculation. According to sources, the resignation has now been formally accepted, officially ending Mengal’s involvement in National Assembly proceedings.

The approval of the resignation marks a significant shift in Balochistan politics. Analysts suggest that this development could impact provincial-federal relations and may prompt new political maneuvers by Mengal and his party. Observers are now watching closely to see the next steps in his political career and the broader implications for the province.
