(Web Desk): Punjab Police started reviewing station house officers (SHOs’) records to identify officials facing corruption or misconduct allegations.

The review follows directions from Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif, with officers’ service records and confidential reports being examined.

Records and complaints checked

Authorities are checking confidential reports and service records of SHOs serving in different districts across Punjab. The Special Branch, police departments and other relevant agencies have also been asked to provide information about officers under review.

Officials are also collecting confidential feedback from local residents. The surveys will examine the performance, reputation and conduct of SHOs in their areas.

Action only after verification

DIG Operations Faisal Kamran said no officer would face action until information from different sources is properly verified. He added that Punjab Police is following the standard operating procedures issued by the Inspector General’s Office for SHO appointments.

According to the DIG, officers with records of corruption cases will not be allowed to continue serving as SHOs. Reports from various institutions, including details of criminal records and corruption cases, are expected to reach the Lahore CCPO on Monday.

Strict action planned

Officials said officers found involved in corruption would face strict action under Punjab Police’s zero-tolerance policy. The review is intended to help ensure that important police posts are given to officers with suitable records and reputations.

The authorities are expected to complete the verification process before making decisions against any officer. This means allegations alone will not automatically result in disciplinary action.

The review could put greater pressure on police officers to maintain professional conduct. Checking information from several sources may also help authorities separate genuine complaints from unverified allegations.

The key issue will be how the information is verified and what action follows. A transparent process could strengthen public confidence in the appointment of SHOs.
