(Web Desk): Pakistan solar energy growth has helped the country save nearly $12 billion as Senator Sherry Rehman urged investment in battery storage.

Pakistan has rapidly increased the use of solar energy, and Senator Sherry Rehman said the country has already achieved major financial benefits. Speaking at the Solar Storage Flexibility Conference in Islamabad, she said the next step is to strengthen battery storage and modernise the electricity system.

She said solar power is now being used in one out of every five households across Pakistan. According to her, expanding battery storage, smart grids and distributed energy resources will make the power system more reliable and improve energy security.

Why battery storage is now the biggest priority

Rehman said better battery storage can balance electricity demand and reduce pressure on the national grid. She added that improved power management would also help the country use renewable energy more efficiently.

The senator said Pakistan could save another $6.3 billion this year if solar energy adoption continues to grow. She stressed that these benefits will depend on improving the electricity network and making clean energy more accessible.

She explained that Pakistan’s energy challenges are not limited to producing electricity. The country also needs better grid management and practical solutions to deal with capacity payment issues.

Rehman said affordable financing is essential to keep the solar transition moving forward. She added that modern grid infrastructure will play a key role in supporting future renewable energy projects.

Pakistan solar energy delivers major savings

She also called for wider access to renewable energy for households and small businesses. According to her, battery storage and distributed energy systems should become central parts of Pakistan’s long-term energy strategy.

The senator noted that strong market demand and private investment have driven the country’s solar expansion. She urged greater financial support to help speed up the adoption of clean energy across Pakistan.

Pakistan’s shift towards solar energy is reducing energy costs and increasing the use of renewable power. Experts believe that better battery storage and a stronger grid will decide how much more the country can benefit in the coming years.

The development could help improve solar power production and expand the use of advanced energy systems worldwide.

The breakthrough was achieved by researchers at the Institute of Chemistry under the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS). Their findings were published in the internationally recognized scientific journal Nature.

Scientists developed a new perovskite-organic tandem solar cell with a certified steady-state power conversion efficiency of 28.04 percent. The research team also recorded a peak laboratory efficiency of 28.80 percent.

Experts say the result places the technology among the most efficient tandem solar cells ever created. The achievement highlights China’s growing role in the global race for advanced clean energy solutions.

The new solar cell combines a wide-bandgap perovskite top layer with an organic bottom layer. This design allows the device to absorb a wider range of sunlight than traditional solar technologies.
