Senior politician Nehal Hashmi has been nominated as the next Governor of Sindh, potentially replacing incumbent Kamran Tessori after Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif forwarded a summary to President Asif Ali Zardari for final approval.
According to officials from the Prime Minister’s Office, the nomination process has been completed and sent to the president, paving the way for a possible leadership change at the Sindh Governor House. Once approved by the president, the appointment of Nehal Hashmi as governor will become official.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif reportedly met Nehal Hashmi and congratulated him on being selected for the key constitutional position, indicating that the transition could take place soon.
Controversy Surrounding Current Governor Kamran Tessori
The possible change in Sindh’s top constitutional office comes at a time when Governor Kamran Tessori has been facing mounting criticism from legal institutions and political leaders.
The Sindh Bar Council last month demanded Tessori’s immediate removal from office, alleging that political gatherings and activities were being held at the Governor House, which they argued violates the constitutional limits of the governor’s role.
During its 109th meeting on February 21, the council passed a resolution stating that the governor’s involvement in political matters and the use of the official residence for political activities were unconstitutional.
The resolution further claimed that Tessori had proven himself “unfit to represent the federation” and urged President Asif Ali Zardari to remove him from the position without delay.

Political Leaders Criticize Event at Governor House
The controversy intensified after an event held at the Governor House in Karachi on February 20 drew criticism from several political figures and nationalist leaders.
Ayaz Latif Palijo, leader of the Qaumi Awami Tehreek, strongly criticized the gathering attended by members of the Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan (MQM-P). He accused Tessori of turning the Governor House into what he described as a “center for conspiracies against Sindh and Pakistan.”
Meanwhile, Sindh Senior Minister and Information Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon also condemned speeches delivered during the ceremony, calling them linguistically biased and inappropriate for a constitutional platform meant to represent the federation.
Possible Political Shift in Sindh
If President Asif Ali Zardari approves the nomination, Nehal Hashmi will assume office as the new governor, marking a significant political shift in Sindh’s provincial leadership. Political analysts say the move could reshape the dynamics between the federal government and provincial stakeholders.
The development has already sparked political debate, with observers closely watching whether the president will formally approve the summary sent by the prime minister.
