Maryam Nawaz’s smog-free Punjab claim faces questions over Lahore pollution

Speaking during her visit to China, Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz said, “Smog used to occur every year in Punjab. This is my third year as chief minister, and for two years, smog has been eliminated in Punjab.”

Claim draws criticism

The statement has sparked debate, with critics questioning whether smog can be described as completely “eliminated” across Punjab. They have also pointed to Lahore’s repeated air-pollution problems during the winter months.

Lahore has faced severe pollution episodes in recent years, with air quality reaching unhealthy levels at different times. These conditions have affected residents and raised concerns about the effectiveness of measures taken to control pollution.

Why pollution becomes worse in winter

Smog is usually most severe between October and February, when colder weather, weak winds and temperature inversions can trap pollutants close to the ground. Vehicle emissions, industrial activity and agricultural burning can further increase harmful particles in the air.

There is also a difference between seasonal visible smog and overall air pollution measured through air-quality levels. A reduction in visible smog does not necessarily mean that pollution has disappeared completely.
