Rawalpindi gets six-month Pakistan Army deployment for security
Three Army companies approved for Rawalpindi
The federal government has approved the deployment of three companies of the Pakistan Army in Rawalpindi for a period of six months.
The decision was taken after the Punjab Home Department requested military assistance for security arrangements in the city. The Interior Ministry issued the relevant order on August 21.
The deployment has been authorised under Article 245 of the Constitution. The provision allows the armed forces to assist the civil administration when required for maintaining security and public order.
The troops will work alongside the Rawalpindi district administration. Their role will include supporting authorities at sensitive locations and important routes across the city.
According to the notification, the military presence is intended to help authorities avoid any undesirable situation and respond quickly if an unforeseen security situation develops.
The deployment takes effect immediately and will continue for six months. The government has not described the measure as a replacement for the civilian administration or regular police duties.
Why has the Army been called in?
The Punjab government requested the deployment as part of security arrangements in Rawalpindi. The federal government then approved the request under the constitutional mechanism provided through Article 245.
The decision gives the district administration additional security support during a period when authorities want to remain prepared for possible law and order challenges.
Reports on the government decision said the three Army companies will comprise more than 400 personnel. Their deployment is expected to strengthen security around sensitive areas and key roads.
The notification does not specify that the troops will take over routine policing. Instead, their stated purpose is to assist the district administration whenever additional security support is required.
This distinction is important because Article 245 provides a legal framework for the armed forces to assist civil authorities. Similar arrangements have been used in Pakistan during periods requiring additional security support.
What will happen during the six-month period?
The Army personnel will remain available to support the Rawalpindi administration during the approved period. Their deployment can help authorities respond more quickly if a serious security situation emerges.
Sensitive locations and important routes are expected to receive particular attention. The aim is to strengthen existing security arrangements rather than remove the responsibilities of local civilian institutions.
The government has also made clear that the deployment is for six months. Any future decision regarding an extension or change would depend on the security situation and the relevant authorities.
For residents, the immediate impact is likely to be greater visibility of security personnel in selected areas. However, the precise locations and operational details have not been publicly disclosed.

What Article 245 means
Article 245 of Pakistan’s Constitution provides the legal basis for using the armed forces in aid of civil power. It is not, by itself, a declaration of martial law.
In this case, the federal government has specifically authorised the Army to assist the Rawalpindi district administration with security duties.
The arrangement therefore places the military in a supporting role while civilian authorities continue handling normal administrative responsibilities.
The government’s decision also highlights the importance being given to security in Rawalpindi, a major city located close to Islamabad and home to important national institutions.
