Karachi (Web Desk): The Pakistan Navy has started a new mission called ‘Operation Muhafiz ul Bahr’ to protect the country’s shipping routes and ensure the safe arrival of energy supplies.

According to a statement from Inter-Services Public Relations, the operation aims to keep key maritime trade routes safe and prevent disruptions to Sea Lines of Communication (SLOCs), which are essential for Pakistan’s imports and exports.

The decision comes as tensions in the Middle East increase due to the conflict involving Iran, the United States, and Israel. The situation has also affected the Strait of Hormuz, a major waterway through which nearly one-fifth of the world’s oil shipments pass.

Because of these disruptions, fears of a possible fuel shortage have increased in Pakistan as global energy markets face uncertainty.

In response to the situation, the government has already taken emergency steps, including a Rs55 per litre increase in petrol and diesel prices. Authorities have also started weekly reviews of fuel prices and introduced austerity measures to reduce unnecessary fuel consumption.

The ISPR said the Pakistan Navy is conducting escort operations in close coordination with the Pakistan National Shipping Corporation to ensure the safe movement of merchant vessels.

Currently, Pakistan Navy ships are escorting two merchant vessels carrying important cargo. One of these ships is expected to arrive in Karachi soon.

Officials said the navy is closely monitoring maritime activities and controlling the movement of ships to guarantee safe transit through sensitive sea routes.

Nearly 90% of Pakistan’s trade is carried through sea routes, making maritime security extremely important for the country’s economy.

The navy also stated that it is fully prepared to respond to any emerging maritime security threats and will continue to ensure the safety of national shipping and regional maritime stability.
