(Web Desk): Supreme Court declares Imran Khan’s jail condition pleas ineffective, allows call with sons, and defers other petitions until High Court decision.

The Supreme Court of Pakistan has issued a detailed seven-page written order on three criminal petitions filed by former prime minister and founder of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Imran Khan.

A two-member bench comprising Chief Justice Yahya Afridi and Justice Shahid Bilal Hassan heard the petitions on February 12. The pleas challenged interim and procedural orders issued during a criminal trial initiated by the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP).

The court ruled that the matter regarding Imran Khan’s living conditions in jail had become ineffective after compliance with earlier court directives. The Attorney General submitted a report on the jail conditions, while Barrister Salman Safdar was appointed as amicus curiae to independently verify the situation.

According to reports from the Adiala Jail superintendent and the amicus curiae, Imran Khan expressed satisfaction with his security, accommodation, food, and overall living conditions. However, concern was raised regarding deterioration in his eyesight. The Attorney General assured the court that a team of eye specialists would conduct a medical examination before February 16.

The court directed authorities to allow Imran Khan to speak with his sons residing in the United Kingdom in accordance with the law.

The remaining two petitions, which challenged the trial court’s interim orders, were declared ineffective since the trial court had already announced its final verdict on August 5, 2023. The Supreme Court adjourned the petitions indefinitely, stating that any further grievances should be pursued before the relevant High Court, where an appeal is pending.
