(Web Desk): The Sindh government will ask the Sindh High Court chief justice to form a judicial commission to review the Mir Raza Ali murder probe.

The commission would examine whether the investigation has been fair, transparent and in line with the law. The move follows a request from Ali’s parents, Mir Hussain and Mariam, who had approached Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah through their lawyer Jibran Nasir. They had asked the chief minister to directly oversee the investigation into their son’s death.

Family raises serious concerns

In their letter, Ali’s parents alleged that investigators appeared to be continuing with a “false narrative of the death of the deceased by suicide”. The Sindh CM’s office said the family’s concerns had been received with “compassion and the utmost seriousness”.

The proposed commission will examine whether investigators properly considered all available evidence and investigative leads. It will also look into any claims of negligence, misconduct, evidence suppression or other unlawful actions by officials.

Commission may recommend further action

The commission could recommend additional investigation, forensic examination and legal or departmental action if required. It would have powers to summon witnesses, examine them under oath and demand relevant documents and records.

The Sindh government has directed departments and officials to fully cooperate with the commission. The Home Department will also provide administrative support to the inquiry.

The commission is expected to submit its findings and recommendations within 30 days of its formation, unless more time is allowed for a complete investigation. It will have authority to examine how the investigation was handled and recommend action under the law.

What happened to Mir Raza Ali?

Ali, a 25-year-old businessman and Institute of Business Administration graduate, was found dead with a gunshot wound in bushes in Karachi’s Gulistan-i-Jauhar. He had been reported missing one day earlier, while his family believed he had been kidnapped, tortured and murdered.

Police initially investigated the possibility that Ali had died by suicide. However, after his exhumation and a second postmortem, a murder charge was added to the FIR after doctors found multiple injuries and a gunshot wound to his back.

The proposed judicial commission could bring a fresh and independent review of the case. Its findings may help clarify whether the investigation followed the correct procedure and whether any evidence or investigative angle was overlooked.
