In a high-stakes legal battle unfolding at the Lahore High Court (LHC), Chief Justice Alia Neelum has constituted a three-member full bench to adjudicate multiple petitions challenging the newly proposed 27th Constitutional Amendment.
The bench was led by Justice Sadaqat Ali Khan, with Justices Jawad Hassan and Sultan Tanvir Ahmad completing the panel.
One of the key petitioners was lawyer Munir Ahmad, along with Mian Shabbir Ismail and a citizen Hassan Latif, who collectively argued that the amendment has disrupted the structure of the 1973 Constitution.
The heart of the challenge was the claim that the 27th constitutional amendment undermines judicial independence by creating a new Federal Constitution Court, potentially weakening the Supreme Court’s authority.
The petitioners further alleged that the move violates not only the basic constitutional structure but also the Islamic provisions and fundamental rights, while being pushed through without proper provincial or civil society consultation.

The case gained further drama when Justice Chaudhary Muhammad Iqbal rescued himself from the matter, citing personal reasons, prompting the chief justice to form the full bench on 27th constitutional amendment.
The court is expected to issue a cause list, signaling the start of a potential constitutional showdown.
