According to sources, while Justice Mirza cited a “personal issue” as the reason for his resignation, his transfer from the Lahore High Court had already been under consideration.
Justice Mirza submitted his resignation to President Asif Ali Zardari. Following his decision, he cleared his chamber and vacated it.
Ranked fifth in seniority at the LHC, Justice Mirza also served as a member of the court’s administration committee. He was appointed as an additional judge in 2014, and his superannuation was scheduled for March 6, 2028.

Justice Shams Mehmood Mirza is the son of former Supreme Court judge Justice Zia Mehmood Mirza.
Earlier this year, a reference in the Supreme Judicial Council (SJC) had also been filed against Justice Mirza by the public prosecutor.
Justice Mirza’s resignation comes at a time when two senior Supreme Court judges Justice Mansoor Ali Shah and Justice Athar Minallah also stepped down from the Supreme Court after issuing strong letters criticising the 27th Amendment.
