IHC revises transport allowance for judicial officers

The Islamabad High Court (IHC) has approved a significant increase in the Transport Monetization Allowance for judicial officers serving in the Islamabad Judicial Service and officers of the High Court.

The revised allowance applies to officers from BPS-17 to BPS-22 and will come into effect from July 1, 2026.

The notification was issued by the Registrar of the Islamabad High Court after receiving approval from Chief Justice Sardar Muhammad Sarfraz Dogar.

According to the notification, the revised allowance aims to update transport-related benefits for judicial officers under the current financial year.

New transport allowance rates announced

Under the new notification, officers in BPS-22 will receive a monthly Transport Monetization Allowance of Rs250,000.

Officers in BPS-21 will receive Rs195,000, while those in BPS-20 will receive Rs175,000 every month.

The revised monthly allowance has also been fixed at Rs150,000 for BPS-19, Rs100,000 for BPS-18, and Rs60,000 for BPS-17 officers.

The notification states that these revised rates will be applicable from July 1, 2026, for eligible judicial officers.

Budget allocated for revised payments

According to the official notification, the increased expenditure will be covered through the allocated budget for the 2026-27 financial year.

The funding will come from the approved budgets of both the Islamabad High Court and the District Judiciary, Islamabad.

Officials said the revised allowance has been incorporated into the existing financial framework without announcing any separate funding arrangement.

The notification did not mention any changes to other allowances or service benefits available to judicial officers.

Decision follows official approval

The revised Transport Monetization Allowance was approved through an administrative process led by the Islamabad High Court.

The notification confirms that Chief Justice Sardar Muhammad Sarfraz Dogar approved the revised allowance schedule before the Registrar formally issued it.

The latest revision updates transport benefits for judicial officers across all eligible grades within the Islamabad Judicial Service.

The announcement has attracted public attention because of the substantial increase in monthly transport-related payments for senior officers.

Jamaat-e-Islami criticises petroleum levy

Separately, Jamaat-e-Islami Pakistan chief Hafiz Naeemur Rehman criticised the government's petroleum levy policy during the “Bano Qabil” graduation ceremony in Multan.

He claimed the government had imposed heavy taxes on citizens without providing adequate public services. According to him, linking fuel price increases only to international oil prices does not present the complete picture.

Hafiz Naeemur Rehman said the petroleum levy was originally introduced to improve refinery and fuel storage capacity but had instead become a financial burden on the public.

He further claimed that the government had collected Rs8,500,000,000,000 through the petroleum levy and alleged that consumers were paying Rs125 in taxes on every litre of petrol.

Public debate continues over government spending

The increase in judicial transport allowance and criticism of petroleum taxes have both sparked public discussion about government spending and public finances.

Supporters of the revised allowance argue that government employees should receive benefits that reflect current economic conditions and operational requirements.

Meanwhile, critics continue to question rising taxes and the increasing financial burden on ordinary citizens, making fiscal policies a key topic of national debate.

Both issues are expected to remain under discussion as policymakers continue addressing budget priorities during the current financial year.
