UN award ceremony in Muscat
The United Nations selects only five programmes from around the world each year for the Scroll of Honour Award. Apni Chhat, Apna Ghar was selected after a competitive and detailed review of housing projects worldwide.
The award will be presented during the global World Habitat Day event on October 5. The main award ceremony will take place next month in Muscat, Oman, where housing and urban development seminars and workshops will also be held from October 6 to 8.
Housing loans cross Rs260 billion
Under the Apni Chhat, Apna Ghar programme, loans worth Rs260 billion have been issued for the construction of more than 200,000 houses. The scheme is also recognised as Pakistan’s largest and first fully digital housing finance programme.
The initiative aims to help families build their own homes through financial support. Its digital system is designed to make housing finance more accessible to eligible applicants.
Details of programme’s two phases
During the first phase, loans worth Rs196 billion were issued for 134,439 houses. In the second phase, more than Rs62 billion in loans were issued for 65,000 houses.
The figures show the scale of the programme’s housing finance support. The international nomination adds another level of recognition to the project’s work in the housing sector.
The nomination brings international attention to Punjab’s housing programme. Its loan distribution figures also show the scale of financial support provided for house construction, particularly for low-income families.
