LAHORE (Web Desk): Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif has announced that the distribution of 100,000 electric bikes under the Punjab e-bike scheme will begin on November 5. The provincial government also plans to expand its Green Bus service across Punjab.

Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif has announced November 5 as the starting date for distributing electric bikes to students under the provincial government’s e-bike scheme.

The programme aims to help students travel more easily to educational institutions and manage their daily journeys. According to the chief minister, the government plans to provide 100,000 electric bikes to students across Punjab.

A larger share of the bikes will be reserved for female students, giving them more opportunities to travel independently for education and other daily activities.

The scheme is intended to make transport more accessible to students while encouraging the use of electric vehicles.

E-bike scheme receives more than 1.2 million registrations

The scheme has attracted considerable interest from students across the province.

Maryam Nawaz said more than 1.2 million registrations had been received, while the number of applications had exceeded 600,000.

These figures indicate strong interest in the programme and the demand for affordable transport among students.

However, registration and application figures do not mean that every applicant will receive a bike. The final number of recipients will depend on the scheme’s eligibility criteria and distribution process.

Students should follow official announcements for information about selection, verification, and the collection of their bikes.

Free riding training for students

The provincial government will also provide free riding training to students who do not know how to ride a bike. According to the announcement, these students will receive two days of training to learn the basic skills needed to ride safely.

The training is intended to make the scheme more accessible to students who may otherwise struggle to use the bikes.

For female students in particular, access to transport and riding skills could help reduce dependence on family members or other transport arrangements for daily journeys. Students should also learn the applicable traffic rules and safety requirements before riding on public roads.

Punjab Green Bus fare to remain at Rs20

Alongside the e-bike announcement, Maryam Nawaz said the fare for Punjab’s fully electric Green Bus service would remain at Rs20 despite increases in petrol and diesel prices.

The decision is intended to keep public transport affordable for passengers who rely on buses for work, education, and other daily activities. According to the chief minister, the service currently operates 700 buses. The government plans to increase the fleet to 3,000 buses within the next six to eight months.

If implemented as announced, the expansion would increase the number of electric buses available to passengers and could improve public transport options in more areas of Punjab. The government also plans to extend the Green Bus service to all 148 tehsils across the province.

Women, students and senior citizens to travel free

According to the announcement, the Green Bus service offers free travel to women, students, senior citizens and people with disabilities. The concession is intended to make public transport more accessible to groups who may face financial or mobility challenges.

Keeping the fare at Rs20 for other passengers could also help people manage their daily travel expenses, particularly when fuel price increases put pressure on transport costs. Passengers should check official service information for details about routes, eligibility criteria, and the availability of free travel concessions.

Electric buses offer modern facilities

The Green Bus service includes several facilities designed to improve the passenger experience. The buses are equipped with air conditioning, Wi-Fi and CCTV cameras.

Air conditioning can make journeys more comfortable during hot weather, while Wi-Fi allows passengers to access the internet during travel. CCTV cameras can also help monitor activity on board.

As the fleet expands, maintaining these facilities and ensuring regular service will be important to providing passengers with a reliable transport option. Extending the service to all 148 tehsils would also require careful planning of routes, bus availability and operational arrangements.

What the transport plans mean for Punjab

The e-bike scheme and Green Bus expansion form part of the provincial government’s plans to improve transport options for students and the wider public. Electric bikes could help eligible students travel more independently, while a larger bus fleet could provide additional public transport connections.

The two programmes serve different needs. E-bikes offer individual mobility to selected students, while Green Buses provide shared transport along designated routes.

Their impact will depend on how effectively the schemes are implemented, how fairly eligible students are selected and whether bus services reach the communities included in the expansion plan.
