Govt scheme offers 125,000 e-bikes to students with no down payment
Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif has directed that students should not be required to pay the down payment for the electric bikes. The move is expected to make the scheme easier for more students to join.
Government to cover interest and insurance
The Punjab government will also pay the interest and insurance costs linked to the electric bikes. This will reduce the financial burden on students receiving bikes under the scheme.
The initiative is aimed at helping students with affordable and convenient transport. It could also make daily travel to educational institutions easier for students across Punjab.
Monthly instalment plan proposed
Officials have agreed to consider a monthly instalment of around Rs3,000 for students. The proposed amount is intended to keep repayments affordable for young people.
The plan could make electric bikes more accessible to students who cannot manage a large upfront payment. Further details are expected when the scheme is formally launched.
E-bike portal to open this week
Maryam Nawaz Sharif has ordered officials to open the e-bike portal this week. Students will be able to access information and apply through the online platform once it becomes operational.
The scheme is part of the Punjab government’s efforts to provide better transport facilities to students. The launch of the portal is expected to bring more clarity about eligibility, applications and the distribution process.
Waiving the down payment could make the scheme more attractive to students. Government support for interest and insurance may further reduce their overall costs.
The proposed Rs3,000 monthly payment could also make the bikes easier to afford. The success of the scheme will depend on a smooth application process and timely delivery of the electric bikes.
On the other side, Peshawar has been selected as the starting point for the electric scooter programme.
Authorities have been directed to take immediate steps to launch the first phase of the scheme. The programme will initially target women in the provincial capital who need reliable transport to reach colleges, universities and workplaces.
The government plans to extend the scheme to other districts after the initial phase is implemented. This means women outside Peshawar could also benefit from the programme at a later stage.
The scheme is aimed at two main groups: female students studying at colleges and universities and working women. The government says distribution will be based on merit to ensure that the scooters go to deserving applicants.
Further details about the number of scooters, application process and eligibility requirements are expected to be announced as the scheme moves towards implementation. The government has also stressed the importance of transparency in the distribution process.
KP e-bike scheme
