Punjab to establish AI labs in schools across the province
The Punjab Curriculum and Textbook Board has approved the introduction of artificial intelligence (AI) education for students up to Grade 5 in schools across the province. The initiative aims to equip young learners with modern digital skills from an early age.
Under the proposed plan, AI laboratories will be established in primary schools, while a dedicated AI curriculum will be introduced to help students understand the fundamentals of artificial intelligence through classroom instruction and practical learning.
Officials said the government will also recruit qualified educationists on a contract basis, as many government schools currently lack teachers with the specialised skills required to teach AI.
The programme will be implemented in two phases. In the first phase, AI will be introduced as a separate subject in the primary school curriculum. In the second phase, modern science and AI laboratories will be established to provide students with hands-on learning opportunities.

Officials said a backup plan has also been prepared in case of budget constraints. Under this proposal, basic AI concepts will be incorporated into existing science textbooks instead of introducing a separate subject immediately.
The Punjab Curriculum and Textbook Board is expected to grant final approval for publishing the new curriculum at its next meeting. The province plans to fully implement the AI education programme from the 2027 academic year. The initiative is part of the Punjab government’s broader efforts to modernise the education system and prepare students for future technologies and emerging career opportunities.
