Govt plans MDCAT after intermediate exams to end academy mafia

Federal Health Minister Mustafa Kamal shared the decision while briefing the Senate Standing Committee on Health.

He said the MDCAT after intermediate exams plan will allow students to prepare through their regular college studies instead of spending months at private coaching centres.

According to the minister, many parents are paying up to Rs100,000 every month for MDCAT coaching.

He said these coaching centres have become an “academy mafia,” creating unnecessary financial pressure on families.

Mustafa Kamal explained that the new MDCAT schedule will ensure the admission test takes place immediately after intermediate examinations.

He believes this change will reduce the need for private coaching and make the admission process fairer for all students.

The minister added that the MDCAT after intermediate exams policy will help students focus on their academic syllabus instead of relying on coaching academies.

He said this reform is aimed at giving every student an equal opportunity to compete for medical college admissions.

Officials also believe the new MDCAT schedule will improve transparency, reduce education costs for parents, and weaken the growing influence of coaching centres.

They said the new MDCAT schedule is part of broader reforms to make medical admissions more merit-based and student-friendly.
