The Punjab government is preparing to significantly expand the Chief Minister (CM) Laptop Scheme to meet growing demand from students across the province. Officials are currently reviewing proposals that could dramatically increase the number of laptops distributed under the initiative, which aims to support digital education and empower youth with modern technology.
According to government sources, two major proposals are under consideration. The first plan suggests increasing the program by 50 percent, raising the total cost to approximately Rs. 40 billion and enabling around 165,000 students to receive laptops.
The second proposal is more ambitious and recommends doubling the scheme, increasing its budget to Rs. 54 billion and potentially benefiting up to 220,000 students across Punjab.
Current Status of the Laptop Scheme
Since the launch of the initiative, more than 143,000 students have applied for the CM Laptop Scheme, while over 35,000 students have already received laptops in the first phase.
The program currently has a total cost of Rs. 27 billion, with Rs. 15 billion allocated for the initial phase.
Meanwhile, the Punjab Higher Education Department has extended the deadline for Phase 2 applications until March 20, 2026, allowing more eligible students to apply online through the official portal.
Officials emphasize that expanding the scheme reflects the government’s commitment to digital education, youth empowerment, and improving access to technology for students across the province.
