SHO suspended after Safe City cameras detect fake number plate

SHO Yousuf Plaza Waqar Awan was travelling in the vehicle when police stopped it near Artillery Maidan. The vehicle was reportedly fitted with a fake number plate.

According to police officials, the vehicle was detected through Safe City cameras operating in the area. The cameras helped identify the vehicle within the limits of Artillery Maidan police station.

The incident has raised questions about the use of vehicles with fake registration plates, particularly when the person involved is a serving police officer.

SHO handed over for investigation

After being stopped, Waqar Awan was initially taken to Artillery Maidan police station. He was later handed over to the Anti-Vehicle Lifting Cell (AVLC) for further investigation.

Police said the AVLC was examining the case and collecting details about the vehicle and its number plate. The investigation will determine how the vehicle came to be used with the alleged fake plate.

Central District Police also took action against the officer. Waqar Awan was removed from his position as SHO and suspended from duty.

Police sources said departmental proceedings would also be initiated against him. Further action could follow depending on the findings of the investigation.

The case is likely to draw attention because Safe City cameras, which are designed to monitor vehicles and improve security, played a key role in identifying the vehicle.

The development also comes at a time when Karachi police are facing pressure to improve law and order and take stronger action against crime.

Another Karachi SHO suspended

In a separate incident, Karachi police suspended Manghopir SHO Raja Zulfiqar after the killing of a 15-year-old boy during a robbery.

The boy, identified as Roshan, was reportedly killed after resisting robbers who entered his home. The incident took place on Monday and sparked anger among the victim’s family and local residents.

AIG Karachi Azad Khan ordered the suspension of the Manghopir SHO. Police said the action was taken over the officer’s alleged failure to control crime in the area.

The suspension came as the victim’s parents staged a sit-in outside Manghopir Police Station. They demanded action over the killing and raised concerns about the security situation in their area.

According to the parents, the robbers entered their home and shot their son. The family said Roshan had memorized the Quran and had recently completed his matriculation examinations with high marks.

His father said Roshan was the only brother of eight sisters, making the loss particularly painful for the family.

The victim’s father also made a serious allegation, claiming that two of the suspected robbers were wearing police uniforms. The allegation is expected to be examined as part of the investigation.

Police facing pressure over crime

The two incidents have put fresh focus on police accountability in Karachi.

In the fake number plate case, action was taken against a serving SHO after the vehicle was identified through surveillance cameras. In the Manghopir case, another SHO was suspended following the killing of a teenager during a reported robbery.
