Experts warn excessive milk tea consumption may harm health
Health experts have cautioned that excessive consumption of milk tea, a staple beverage across South Asia, may pose several health risks despite its cultural popularity and daily use in social and hospitality settings.
A nutrition expert explained that the health impact of tea largely depends on its preparation, including the type of tea leaves used, the amount of milk and sugar added, and overall consumption habits. While moderate tea intake can provide energy, alertness, and refreshment, specialists recommend limiting consumption to three to four cups per day.
The expert warned that high levels of sugar in milk tea can lead to increased blood sugar levels, raising concerns for individuals at risk of diabetes. Similarly, overly strong tea and excessive milk intake may contribute to digestive issues such as stomach discomfort, gas, and lactose intolerance-related symptoms.
Health professionals also advised against drinking milk tea immediately after dinner or close to bedtime, as caffeine content may disrupt sleep patterns. It is recommended to avoid tea and other caffeinated drinks at least three to four hours before sleep.
The expert further highlighted that combining tea with smoking can be particularly harmful, increasing the risk of dehydration and negatively affecting overall health.

As healthier alternatives, nutritionists suggested options such as black tea, green tea, or lighter brews. Natural additives like ginger, cardamom, cinnamon, cloves, and fennel were recommended for improving flavor while also supporting digestive health.
Green tea and matcha were also noted for their potential health benefits when consumed with plain hot water, though these benefits may be reduced when milk, cream, or excess sugar is added.
Experts emphasized that there is no need to completely eliminate tea from the diet, but stressed the importance of moderation, smaller servings, and increased water intake to maintain a balanced and healthier lifestyle.
