Petrol and diesel prices near Rs400 after fresh fuel hike
The federal government has raised petrol and high-speed diesel (HSD) prices following changes in international oil prices. The new rates are effective from October 2, according to the Petroleum Division.
New rates announced
Petrol will now be available at Rs392.76 per litre after an increase of Rs2.10. The price of HSD has been fixed at Rs399.64 per litre after an increase of Re0.30.
The latest rates are part of the government’s new approach to reviewing petroleum prices more frequently. The Petroleum Division is publishing updated petroleum prices through its official channels.
Daily pricing system continues
The government has moved towards a daily fuel price review mechanism to respond more quickly to changes in international oil prices. Ogra has also started publishing daily petroleum prices on its website to improve transparency.
Petroleum Minister Ali Pervaiz Malik said the daily prices are based on a seven-day average of international market prices. The method is intended to keep domestic fuel prices more closely linked with global market movements.
Global oil market remains uncertain
Global oil prices have remained volatile amid renewed tensions in the Middle East. Concerns about energy supplies through the Strait of Hormuz have also added pressure to international oil markets.
The government had previously used a fortnightly system for revising petroleum prices. It later moved to a weekly review system before shifting towards more frequent adjustments.
The latest increase means motorists will have to pay more for both petrol and diesel. The impact could also be felt in transport and other costs that depend on fuel.
The daily pricing system may allow local fuel rates to respond faster to international market changes. However, it could also mean that consumers see more frequent changes in petrol and diesel prices.
