Fresh from acquiring a controlling stake in Pakistan International Airlines (PIA), leading businessman Arif Habib has set his sights on Pakistan’s largely untapped blue economy. His focus is now turning toward the Pakistan National Shipping Corporation (PNSC), seen as a key player in maritime development.
Speaking to journalists at Naya Nazimabad Gymkhana, the 73-year-old industrialist said the new PNSC management has invited him for talks. He noted that discussions would focus on the future direction of the national shipping company.

Pakistan’s blue economy, which covers the sustainable commercial use of ocean resources, remains underdeveloped. Experts estimate its potential value at over USD100 billion, yet it currently contributes less than 0.5 percent to the country’s GDP.
At the same time, reports suggest PNSC plans a major expansion. The corporation aims to increase its fleet from 10 vessels to 54 ships by 2030. This move is intended to capture a large share of nearly USD6 billion paid every year to foreign shipping lines in freight charges.
If successful, the expansion could reduce reliance on international carriers and keep more shipping revenue within Pakistan’s economy.
