Islamabad (Web Desk): Pakistan plans to raise gemstone exports by $1 billion in the coming years, unveiling a new policy to grow the gems and jewellery sector.

The federal government has decided to significantly boost Pakistan’s gemstone exports by $1 billion over the next four to five years. The move is part of a broader plan to develop the gems and jewellery sector and bring it closer to global standards.

An initial draft of the Gems and Jewellery Policy for 2027–2030 has been prepared and will soon be shared with stakeholders for consultation. Under this policy, gemstone exports are expected to rise sharply within five years.

According to official documents, around 3,500 workers will be trained during this period to build skilled manpower for the industry. The government also plans to hold 320 international exhibitions and nearly 1,000 local exhibitions to promote Pakistani gemstones worldwide.

The policy proposes value addition worth Rs624 million through gemstone centers over the next five years. It also includes providing 48 modern machines to improve processing and exports, along with a total allocation of Rs9.78 billion over four years to support the sector.

Earlier this month, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif gave in-principle approval to a national policy framework focused on reforming the gemstone industry. The aim is to attract foreign investment and align the sector with international practices.

Chairing a high-level meeting, the prime minister stressed strict adherence to the policy timeline. He highlighted Pakistan’s vast gemstone reserves and directed geological surveys to assess their location and value in coordination with provinces and stakeholders.

He also ordered immediate steps to set up international-standard laboratories and certification systems. Two model Centers of Excellence for gemstones are to be established this year, with help from internationally recognized experts.

The prime minister noted that Pakistan’s gemstone exports remain very low despite huge natural reserves. He called on private companies, especially young entrepreneurs, to invest and help unlock the sector’s true potential.
