Tesla has revealed a major strategic shift. CEO Elon Musk announced during Tesla’s latest earnings call that the company will end production of its flagship vehicles, the Model S sedan and Model X SUV, and repurpose its factory space to build Optimus humanoid robots.
Production of the Model S and Model X will end by the second quarter of 2026. The Model S, introduced in 2012, and the Model X, launched in 2015, were once key to Tesla’s rise in the electric vehicle market.
However, their sales have declined in recent years as customers increasingly choose the more affordable Model 3 and Model Y.
Musk described the move as a necessary step toward Tesla’s future goals. The company plans to convert the Fremont, California factory’s Model S and X production lines into a facility capable of manufacturing up to one million Optimus robots per year.

The transformation comes amid broader changes at Tesla, including a shift toward autonomy, artificial intelligence and robotics. Musk has highlighted these areas as central to the company’s long-term growth. Tesla will continue to support existing Model S and Model X owners even after production ends.
