This exciting announcement was made during a meeting led by Public Accounts Committee Chairman Junaid Akbar. The meeting reviewed the financial and audit matters of the Ministry of Overseas Pakistanis and EOBI.
According to media reports, the EOBI fund is now worth Rs600 billion. However, a shocking revelation was also made — around Rs2.79 billion were wrongly given to fake pensioners! Officials disclosed that about 5,000 people fraudulently changed their age records to receive pensions.
During the meeting, Chairman Junaid Akbar raised a serious question: How can there be a mismatch between the matriculation certificate and the national ID card? In response, the Secretary for Overseas Pakistanis stated that from now on, pensions will only be approved based on the national ID card to prevent such fraud.
The secretary explained that the problematic cases mostly belong to people born in the 1950s and 1960s, when the system was less strict. Audit officials also clarified that out of 800,000 pensioners, only around 5,000 cases are suspicious.
In a discussion, member Riaz Fatyana mentioned that even in a developed country like the USA, labor fraud worth 4 billion dollars has happened — so Pakistan must also use modern technology to uncover more such issues.
The committee chairman ordered a full verification of all pensioners data and strict action against fake claimants
