The United States is reportedly preparing to seize Iranian oil tankers in international waters to increase pressure on Iran, according to a claim by The Wall Street Journal. The move could significantly escalate tensions in the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz.
US Strategy to Pressure Iran
The report suggests that Washington aims to target Iranian oil shipments and commercial vessels as part of a broader strategy to force Tehran into concessions. These include reopening the Strait of Hormuz and offering flexibility regarding its nuclear program.
Analysts warn that such actions could heighten geopolitical risks and trigger further instability in global energy markets.
Iran Responds with New Maritime Rules
In response, Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps has announced plans to enforce a new regulatory system in the Strait of Hormuz. Under this framework:
- All vessels passing through must obtain permission from the Iranian navy
- Ships will be required to follow designated routes set by Iran
- Entry of foreign warships will face strict restrictions
These measures could further complicate navigation through one of the world’s most critical oil transit chokepoints.

Strait of Hormuz: A Global Flashpoint
Previously, Iran had hinted at reopening the Strait following a ceasefire in Lebanon. However, Tehran later clarified that the waterway would not be fully restored until the US halts what it describes as “illegal actions.”
Experts caution that any further escalation in the region could disrupt global oil shipments and have serious consequences for the world economy.
