Rising Middle East tensions have forced Israel, Iran, Iraq and Qatar to close their airspace, triggering widespread flight cancellations and major disruptions across the global aviation network. Multiple flights from the United Arab Emirates (UAE) to Iran and Israel have been canceled as airlines reroute long-haul services to avoid restricted zones.
According to airport websites across the region, flight schedules are being significantly impacted due to the evolving security situation.
European low-cost carrier Wizz Air announced the suspension of all flights to Israel, Dubai, Abu Dhabi, and Amman until March 7. The airline said it is closely monitoring developments and remains in contact with local and international authorities.
Similarly, Norwegian airline Norwegian Air Shuttle has suspended all inbound and outbound flights to Dubai until further notice.
Israel, Iran, Iraq and Qatar Shut Airspace
Israel has closed its airspace to civilian traffic, diverting incoming flights to alternative destinations.
Iran has also shut its airspace and imposed temporary telecommunications restrictions in certain areas amid heightened security concerns.
Iraq’s airspace closure has significantly impacted one of the most critical aviation corridors linking Europe, the Gulf and Asia, forcing airlines to take longer detours.
Qatar has temporarily closed its airspace as well, adding further strain to regional air traffic flow.

Long-Haul Flights Rerouted; Travel Time Increases
Flight-tracking data indicates that long-haul services between Europe and Asia are now flying south over Saudi Arabia or rerouting north via Central Asia. These detours are increasing travel times, fuel costs, and causing missed connections for passengers.
Impact on Major Gulf Airlines
Emirates
Dubai International Airport remains operational. However, Emirates has altered routes between Europe and Asia to avoid Iranian and Iraqi airspace. Suspensions or cancellations to Iran and Iraq remain possible depending on security assessments.
Qatar Airways
Doha’s Hamad International Airport is open, though minor delays and schedule adjustments are expected. Flights to Iran have been suspended as a precautionary measure.
Etihad Airways
Abu Dhabi Airport remains open. Etihad has adopted alternative routes for long-haul operations, and operational adjustments may affect select international services.
Saudia
Saudi airspace remains open. Saudia has adjusted some northern routes but is comparatively less affected. Due to Saudi Arabia’s strategic geography, Jeddah and Riyadh may temporarily gain importance as alternative transit hubs.
Global Aviation Industry on High Alert
The cascading Middle East airspace closures are disrupting global aviation corridors, increasing operational costs, and straining airline schedules. With multiple countries imposing restrictions, the aviation industry is closely watching developments as geopolitical tensions reshape international air traffic patterns.
Airlines have urged passengers to check flight status before departure and stay in contact with carriers for real-time updates.
