Ukraine’s Zelenskyy meets Trump amid Iran and Russia tensions
Zelenskyy is also expected to attend the funeral of US Senator Lindsey Graham and meet members of the US Senate. The developments come as lawmakers prepare to vote on a new package of sanctions against Russia.
The proposed legislation, which has been pending for months, could significantly increase economic pressure on Moscow. It includes 100 percent tariffs on goods from the five biggest buyers of Russian oil and gas, including China and India.
Trump has also pushed to include sanctions against Iran in the same legislation. Zelenskyy has previously described the idea as a “great idea”, adding another link between the conflicts involving Ukraine, Russia and Iran.
The situation has become more complicated after Ukraine attacked an Iranian tanker in the Caspian Sea. Ukraine’s ambassador to Israel, Yevgen Korniychuk, said the vessel was carrying drones and military components from Iran to Russia.
Iran has warned that it could retaliate over the attack. The incident has raised concerns because Ukraine’s war with Russia and the wider conflict involving Iran are now becoming connected in ways that could affect regional security.
Ukraine’s actions against Iranian vessels could also align with Washington’s pressure on Tehran. However, analysts say Kyiv may be careful about becoming too closely linked to the US military campaign against Iran.
The United States no longer provides direct financial assistance to Ukraine for its war against Russia. However, Washington continues to provide important intelligence for long-range operations and sells weapons to European countries that later transfer them to Ukraine.
The upcoming meeting also comes after a major improvement in relations between Trump and Zelenskyy. Their relationship became tense after a heated meeting at the White House in February 2025.

Since then, the two sides have moved towards closer defence cooperation. Earlier this month, they agreed to allow Ukraine and the US to jointly produce Patriot air defence interceptors.
The countries are also moving closer to an agreement on joint drone production. Ukraine has developed major expertise in drone warfare, making cooperation in this field important for both sides.
Ukraine is expected to produce between 6 million and 7 million short-range attack drones this year. By comparison, the Pentagon’s $1.1 billion drone production programme is expected to order just under 200,000 drones cumulatively by February 2027.
