(Web Desk): Ukraine's claimed drone attack on vessels in the Caspian Sea has intensified tensions with Iran and raised fresh security concerns.

The Caspian Sea, the world's largest inland body of water, has emerged as a new flashpoint after Ukraine claimed it targeted Russian vessels carrying military cargo from Iran.

According to Ukrainian officials, drones struck two Russian ships in the Caspian Sea that were transporting military supplies from Iran to a Russian port. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said the targeted vessels were involved in delivering Iranian military equipment to Russia, highlighting Kyiv's efforts to disrupt Moscow's supply routes.

Iran, however, rejected the claim and said one of the vessels hit was a commercial ship carrying iron rather than military cargo. Iranian authorities confirmed that one official was killed and three others were injured in the attack.

The incident has sharply increased tensions between Tehran and Kyiv. Iran warned that it would respond to what it described as a "dangerous provocation" and summoned Ukraine's chargé d'affaires in Tehran to lodge a formal protest.

Regional Governor Hadi Haghshenas stressed the strategic importance of the Anzali port route, describing it as a secure and reliable trade corridor linking Iran and Russia. The route has become increasingly important as economic and military cooperation between the two countries continues to expand.

Security analysts say the reported attack could further complicate regional stability and increase concerns over the safety of shipping routes in the Caspian Sea. The waterway has gained strategic significance since Russia strengthened its economic and defence ties with Iran following Western sanctions and the ongoing war in Ukraine.

The latest developments underline how the conflict is expanding beyond traditional battlefields, creating new security risks across the wider region.
