(Web Desk): Pope Leo says God rejects the prayers of leaders who wage wars as the Iran conflict enters its second month

Speaking to a large crowd at St Peter’s Square during Palm Sunday, the pope described the conflict as “atrocious” and warned that religion should never be used to justify violence.

He said, “This is our God: Jesus, King of Peace, who rejects war, whom no one can use to justify war.” His words were seen as a clear call for peace amid rising global tensions.

The pope further added that God does not listen to those who wage war. Quoting a Bible passage, he said, “Even though you make many prayers, I will not listen: your hands are full of blood.”

Although Pope Leo did not name any specific country or leader, his recent speeches have increasingly criticized the ongoing conflict involving Iran. His message appears to be directed at all sides involved in the war.

He also expressed concern for Christians living in the Middle East, saying they are suffering deeply because of the conflict and may not be able to celebrate Easter peacefully.

Pope Leo has repeatedly called for an immediate ceasefire and warned that airstrikes are often indiscriminate and harmful to innocent people.

His remarks come at a time when some leaders have used religious language to defend military actions. This has raised concerns among observers about mixing faith with warfare.

The pope also referred to the example of Jesus, who chose peace over violence even in difficult moments. He said Jesus never supported war and instead showed a path of patience and sacrifice.
