Ukraine has launched fresh drone attacks on Russia, killing at least 12 people and injuring several others, according to Russian officials and state media.

The attacks reportedly targeted industrial and civilian sites in Nizhnekamsk, a city in Russia’s Tatarstan region. Local authorities said emergency teams were deployed following the strikes.

Nizhnekamsk Mayor Radmir Belyaev said on Telegram that both industrial and civilian targets were hit in the attack. However, officials did not immediately provide detailed information about the extent of the damage.

Russian media reports said the Taneco oil refinery, one of Russia’s most technologically advanced refineries, was damaged in the drone strikes.

Unverified videos circulating on social media appeared to show thick smoke rising above the refinery following the attack. Reuters said it was unable to independently verify the footage.

The Taneco refinery has previously been targeted by Ukrainian drones. It was also reportedly hit in early June, highlighting the growing threat to Russia’s energy infrastructure.

The refinery produced around 17 million tonnes of crude oil in 2024, according to available industry data. Its output included about 2.7 million tonnes of gasoline and 8.5 million tonnes of diesel fuel.

The latest attack could raise fresh concerns about disruptions to Russia’s oil processing capacity and fuel supplies.

Ukraine has increasingly targeted Russian military and energy infrastructure with long-range drones during the ongoing war, while Moscow has continued launching strikes against Ukrainian targets.

The latest casualties and damage could further escalate tensions as both sides continue their aerial attacks.
