US President Donald Trump has said the Iran war could end this year, possibly shortly after the US midterm elections in November. He also claimed that Iran wants to reach a deal and has been making efforts to establish contact.

Trump said Washington would only accept an agreement that serves US interests. He stressed that any deal with Tehran would have to be favourable and acceptable to the United States.

Oil and fuel prices in focus

Trump also predicted that petrol prices would fall rapidly once the conflict ends. Global energy markets have faced heavy pressure during the conflict, with crude prices recently moving above $100 a barrel amid fears over supply disruptions and shipping through the Strait of Hormuz.

Trump also said Gulf countries could meet Iran if they wished, describing such talks as their own decision.
