Top university bans student parties after alleged sexual and drug abuse
Cornell bans fraternity social events
Cornell University, one of the most prestigious universities in the United States, has stopped social events at student fraternity houses for the rest of the academic year. The decision followed a lawsuit alleging that a woman was drugged and sexually assaulted by several people at a party in 2024.
The woman, identified as Jane Doe in court documents to protect her identity, filed the lawsuit last month. Her allegations have raised fresh questions about how the university handles sexual assault complaints.
University promises stronger safety measures
Cornell President Michael Kotlikoff expressed concern over the alleged incident and said the university must address women’s safety concerns. He also acknowledged that the institution needed to recognise its shortcomings.
Kotlikoff warned that students who break the new restrictions could face suspension of their enrolment. The university also plans to add staff to support sexual assault survivors and improve its complaint-reporting system.
Police and officials to review the case
Specially trained New York State Police personnel will assist with investigations into sexual assault complaints. The move comes as questions grow over how local prosecutors handled the case.
Tompkins County District Attorney Matthew Van Houten said his office received only a six-page statement from the woman and some social media messages from Cornell in 2024. State officials have raised concerns about the decision not to prosecute and the lack of independent witness interviews.
New York launches investigation
New York Governor Kathy Hochul has assigned Attorney General Letitia James to investigate the matter. The review is expected to examine concerns surrounding the handling of the case.
The woman’s lawyer also said she had received threats after the alleged assault. The university’s restrictions and the state investigation have brought renewed attention to campus safety and the response to sexual assault allegations.
Cornell’s decision shows how serious sexual assault allegations can lead to major changes on campus. The restrictions may help address safety concerns, but students and families will also want clear answers about how complaints are investigated.
The state investigation could help clarify how the case was handled. Its findings may also influence how universities and authorities respond to similar complaints in the future.
