Pakistani-Canadian Zeeshan Hamid appointed Ontario’s new minister
Pakistani-Canadian politician Zeeshan Hamid has taken charge as Ontario’s new Minister of Tourism, Culture and Gaming. The appointment marks a major step forward in the political career of the Milton representative.
Hamid takes charge of key portfolio
Hamid represents Milton in the Legislative Assembly of Ontario. He previously served as Associate Solicitor General for Auto Theft and Bail Reform.
The latest cabinet changes came after Premier Doug Ford reshuffled his provincial government. Some official government pages may still show Hamid’s previous role as the changes are recent.
From Karachi to Ontario politics
Hamid entered provincial politics after winning the Milton by-election on May 2, 2024. He received 47.04% of the vote and defeated Liberal candidate Galen Naidoo Harris.
Before becoming a member of the provincial parliament, Hamid had a long career in local government. He served on Milton Town Council and Halton Regional Council and was active in community and municipal affairs for more than a decade.
Hamid’s official biography says he moved to Canada from Karachi as a teenager. He later built a career in technology before entering politics.
Rapid rise in provincial government
After entering Queen’s Park, Hamid became Parliamentary Assistant to Ontario Finance Minister Peter Bethlenfalvy in June 2024. He later took charge of the auto-theft and bail-reform portfolio in March 2025.
His new ministry covers important areas of Ontario’s economy and culture. It oversees tourism, arts, cultural industries, heritage and libraries, while also working with major attractions and the private sector.
Major milestone for Pakistani-Canadian community
Hamid’s appointment is being seen as another important milestone in his political career. He has become one of the first members of Premier Doug Ford’s government from the Pakistani-Canadian community to hold a senior provincial portfolio.
His new role will place him at the centre of policies linked to Ontario’s tourism and cultural sectors. The ministry is also expected to work on strengthening their economic and social contribution.
Zeeshan Hamid’s new role shows his growing position in Ontario politics. His journey from Karachi to a senior provincial cabinet position is also notable for the Pakistani-Canadian community.
The tourism and culture ministry is an important portfolio because it connects the economy, tourism and cultural activities. Hamid will now have a major responsibility in managing these areas across Ontario.
