The device, a jar filled with nuts, bolts, and screws wrapped in black tape with a fuse, was ignited and thrown by a counterprotester on Saturday near Gracie Mansion. It extinguished itself before detonating, preventing any injuries, according to New York City Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch. Two people have been arrested in connection with the incident.
This was one of two devices thrown during protests involving opposing groups. The second device is still under investigation.
Far-right activist Jake Lang led a small protest of about 20 people outside Gracie Mansion, objecting to a supposed Islamic “takeover” of New York City and public prayers by Muslims. Tisch said Mayor Mamdani and his wife were not home at the time of the attack.
The counterprotest drew around 125 people, aiming to “run Nazis out of New York.” Emir Balat, 18, was among those who lit and threw the first jar bomb. Balat later lit and dropped a second device in the street before being arrested along with Ibrahim Kayumi.

Mayor Mamdani condemned both the far-right protest and the violence that followed. “Violence at a protest is never acceptable,” he said. “The attempt to use an explosive device and hurt others is not only criminal, but it is also reprehensible, and the antithesis of who we are.”
Police are working with the FBI and the US Department of Justice to investigate the incident. Tisch said there is no immediate evidence linking the attacks to US military action in Iran, but investigations are ongoing.
