Kenya reports first Ebola death
Kenya reports first Ebola death
The Kenya Ebola death has raised fresh concerns as health authorities work to determine whether the infection could spread further.
The patient was a 40-year-old Kenyan businessman who had been living in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
The first Ebola death in Kenya is being closely monitored because the patient travelled through Uganda before reaching Nairobi.
Health Minister Aden Duale said the man became ill around a month ago while living in the DRC.
Patient travelled through Uganda
The Ebola case Kenya authorities are investigating involved a man who travelled overland from the DRC to Kampala, Uganda.
He later flew to Nairobi and arrived in the Kenyan capital on October 3.
The Kenya Ebola death has prompted health officials to examine the patient’s movements and identify people who may have had contact with him.
Health authorities are expected to strengthen monitoring as part of efforts to prevent further transmission.
First Ebola case recorded in Kenya
The first Ebola death in Kenya is significant because the country had never previously recorded an Ebola case.
The Ebola outbreak Kenya is now monitoring comes as health officials across the region remain concerned about infections linked to travel from the DRC.
Authorities are expected to carry out contact tracing and closely monitor people who may have been exposed.
The Ebola case Kenya has confirmed also highlights the importance of quickly identifying suspected infections.
Ebola outbreak continues in DRC
The Ebola outbreak Kenya is dealing with comes while the Democratic Republic of Congo continues to battle its 17th Ebola outbreak.
The outbreak was declared in May.
The disease has caused major health emergencies across Africa. More than 15,000 people have died from Ebola across the continent over the past 50 years.
The Kenya Ebola death has therefore drawn attention beyond the country as neighbouring states continue to watch developments in the DRC.

Uganda also reported cases
Uganda, which shares a border with Kenya, had previously recorded 20 Ebola cases.
Almost all of those cases involved people who had travelled from the DRC.
Two people died before Uganda was declared Ebola-free in August.
The first Ebola death in Kenya has now added to concerns about cross-border transmission in East Africa.
Health authorities in the region are likely to continue monitoring travellers and possible contacts.
Africa CDC sends support
The Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention has announced that it will send a team to Kenya to support local health authorities.
Africa CDC Director General Jean Kaseya is also expected to visit the country in the coming days.
The organisation will assist authorities with surveillance and response measures.
The Ebola outbreak Kenya is now responding to could require continued cooperation between regional health agencies.
