MOSCOW (Web Desk): A lab worker’s reported death has triggered a health scare in Siberia, with quarantine and mask measures introduced in parts of Irkutsk.

Lab worker dies after suspected infection

A reported Irkutsk plague case has raised concern in Russia’s Siberian Irkutsk region after a laboratory worker at an anti-plague research institute died.

The worker, identified by local media as Darya Shipilova, worked at the Irkutsk Anti-Plague Research Institute in Shelekhov.

Reports said she died on October 2 after becoming seriously ill. Some reports linked her illness to an alleged laboratory accident involving a test tube containing the bacteria that causes plague.

However, Russian health authorities have not officially confirmed that plague caused her death.

The reported Russia plague scare has led authorities and institutions to introduce precautionary measures while the circumstances are examined.

Hospitals placed under quarantine

Several hospitals in Irkutsk have reportedly introduced quarantine measures following the case.

According to reports, City Hospitals No. 1, 3 and 10 and a children’s hospital were placed under a three-week quarantine.

The reported Russia quarantine measures are intended to reduce possible risks while people who had contact with the worker are monitored.

Nearly 200 people have reportedly been placed under medical observation after possible contact with the laboratory worker.

Mask rule introduced at factory

The Irkutsk Aluminum Plant in Shelekhov also introduced a mask requirement for employees.

The measure came as the Siberia plague concerns continued to attract attention.

Factory director Artem Fominykh advised workers to seek medical attention if they developed symptoms.

He later described the mask requirement as a routine response to seasonal respiratory illness.

The reported Russia plague scare has nevertheless increased public attention around the situation.

Officials give different accounts

Russian officials have provided different descriptions of the illness.

The governor of neighboring Buryatia, Alexei Tsydenov, previously said the woman had died “possibly” from plague. He later changed his statement to include uncertainty.

Irkutsk Governor Igor Kobzev said preventive measures were being carried out under the supervision of Rospotrebnadzor.

He referred to the illness as “pneumonia of unknown origin” and said people who had contact with the worker had been identified and placed under medical observation.

The situation has raised fresh questions about the reported Siberia plague case and the information being provided by authorities.

Warning deleted after residents were told to stay away

The Baykalsk city administration also issued a warning asking residents to temporarily avoid Shelekhov and nearby settlements because of unofficial reports of a confirmed plague case.

The message was deleted less than two hours after it was posted, according to local media reports.

The warning added to the Russia quarantine measures already being reported in the region.

What is known about the illness?

Pneumonic plague is caused by the bacterium Yersinia pestis and affects the lungs.

The pneumonic plague form can spread through respiratory droplets and can become serious without early treatment.

However, laboratory testing is needed to confirm an infection.

Russian health authorities have not publicly confirmed plague as the cause of the worker’s death.

The reported Russia virus outbreak concerns therefore remain linked to an unconfirmed diagnosis rather than an officially confirmed wider outbreak.

What happens next?

Health authorities are monitoring people who had contact with the laboratory worker.

Further testing could provide more information about the cause of her illness and determine whether there is any wider public health risk.

The Siberia plague situation will likely remain under observation while officials continue their investigation.

For now, the reported Irkutsk plague case remains the focus of health authorities and local communities.
