According to details, the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) had set a deadline of November 30 for VPN registration. However, the decision to implement this has been delayed.
Sources from PTA claim that despite the expiry of deadline, unregistered VPNs will continue to function, and a final decision on the matter is expected next week. The Interior Ministry will provide written instructions before any action is taken against unregistered VPNs, sources added.
The registration of VPNs was initiated to ensure safe internet usage and block illegal activities. However, the IT industry, freelancers, and other stakeholders have expressed concerns and requested an extension for registration.
Experts believe that a decision on VPN blocking could not only impact the IT industry but also affect the country s economy. The government has hinted that it would make a decision next week after considering all the aspects.
