WhatsApp rolls out reserved usernames update for select users
WhatsApp begins activating usernames
The latest WhatsApp update has started enabling WhatsApp usernames for a small group of users. The new system allows people to create and reserve a unique username that can be shared instead of their phone number.
The WhatsApp username feature was introduced last month, but only selected users are now seeing it become active. A wider rollout is expected in the coming weeks.
How the WhatsApp username feature works
To access the WhatsApp username feature, users need to open Settings > Account > Username.
They can reserve a unique username and also manage privacy settings. Users can decide whether anyone with their username can contact them or whether new contacts must enter a four-digit PIN before sending a message.
WhatsApp reserved usernames add extra protection
To prevent impersonation, WhatsApp reserved usernames come with additional verification. If a selected username matches one linked to Facebook or Instagram, WhatsApp may ask users to confirm ownership of that account.
The company says WhatsApp reserved usernames are designed to reduce fake accounts, protect well-known usernames, and make scams more difficult.

How to check if you have the update
According to WABetaInfo, both beta testers and some regular users are beginning to receive the WhatsApp update.
Eligible users will see a banner at the top of their chat list confirming that their username is active.
Those who do not have access yet can visit the Username section in their profile. If the feature has not reached their account, WhatsApp will display a message saying it will be available soon.
As the rollout expands, more users are expected to gain access to WhatsApp usernames and the WhatsApp username feature.
