ISLAMABAD (Web Desk): The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has linked the internet slowdown to issues with telecom infrastructure.

A PTA document said that slow internet speeds are caused by lacunae in telecom infrastructure, power outages, and inadequate fiberization rather than the web management system (WMS).

The web management system, which has been operational for 18 years, focuses on controlling grey traffic and does not contribute to reducing internet speed, claimed PTA. It also states that 42 percent of telecom sites across Pakistan operate without generators, leaving over 21,000 sites vulnerable to power outages. This has significantly impacted internet and telecom services during load-shedding. While generators are installed at 24,885 sites, many of them lack sufficient power backup.

The document further revealed the security concerns, highlighting that over 739 telecom sites have been targeted by thieves in recent years. This led to the theft of generators and other crucial equipment. PTA further claimed that almost 147 sites were attacked by terrorists over the last five years.

Regarding the faulting in submarine cable, the PTA stated that faults in international connectivity cables have been resolved. It also mentioned the up-and-coming project of Transworld, that is laying a 45,000 KM cable to connect Pakistan with 33 African and Middle Eastern countries.

The cable, with an 18-terabyte-per-second capacity, is expected to significantly boost bandwidth and improve internet speed, according to the document. The Ministry of IT and the PTA are working together with stakeholders, including telecom operators and social media platforms, to implement solutions and enhance internet services across the country.
