Once the go-to platform for free global voice and video calls, Skype reached over 300 million users at its peak but eventually lost ground to rivals like WhatsApp, Zoom, and even Microsoft’s own Teams.

Microsoft, which bought Skype for $8.5 billion in 2011, announced the platform’s retirement as part of its plan to streamline services and focus on Teams as its primary communication tool.

While Skype for Business will hang on a little longer, both free and paid versions of Skype will cease to operate.

Users are encouraged to transition to Microsoft Teams via skype.com, where they can use the same login credentials to retain their chats and contacts. Microsoft has set a deadline of January 2026 for users to download or migrate their data before it is permanently deleted.
