WhatsApp starts testing ads in status updates

(Web Desk): The world’s most used messaging app Whats app, is testing advertisements by status updates and preparing to roll out paid promotions for Channels.

These changes are being tested in select countries right now, and will slowly be introduced to users around the world in the coming months.

Meta, the parent company of WhatsApp and previously known as Facebook, bought the app in 2014 for a whopping $19 billion, leaving many confused why such a huge amount was paid for a free messaging service.

But now, Meta has finally revealed how it plans to make money from WhatsApp. With over 3 billion users globally, Meta has started testing ads in the status tab similar to Instagram stories and is allowing WhatsApp channels to pay Meta for boosting their visibility.

Through this new Promoted Channels” feature, channel creators will be able to pay a fee to help more users discover their content. Just like YouTube, WhatsApp is also planning to introduce a subscription model where users can pay monthly to access exclusive content from their favorite channels.

And that’s not all Meta has also launched its AI feature ‘Imagine Me’ on WhatsApp, Instagram, and Messenger in India. This tool, powered by Meta AI’s Emu model, can turn your selfies into animated art, brush paintings, or comic-style graphics all within seconds.
