Antarctica (Web Desk): Scientists propose an $80 billion undersea wall to protect the Doomsday Glacier and prevent catastrophic sea level rise.

An international team of scientists has suggested an unusual plan to stop the collapse of the Thwaites Glacier, also known as the Doomsday Glacier.

Their idea is to build a 150-meter-high, 50-mile-long wall along the seabed, 650 meters below the ocean surface. This “Seabed Curtain” would block warm waters from reaching the glacier and melting the ice.

The Doomsday Glacier is critical because its collapse could raise global sea levels by 2 feet, threatening coastal cities and millions of people worldwide.

Marianne Hagen, one of the project’s lead scientists, told IFLScience, “For me, it’s kind of a no-brainer. Just because it is extremely difficult is not an excuse not to try.”

She added, “If it's possible to take 65 centimeters of global sea level rise off the table for everybody, with one single targeted intervention, I'm willing to explore it.”

The glacier has been shrinking for decades. Its melting rate more than doubled between the 1990s and 2010s due to global warming.

Before attempting the massive Antarctic project, scientists plan to test a smaller version of the seabed wall in a Norwegian fjord to see if it works and can be scaled up.

The ambitious plan comes with a huge price tag. According to the Atlantic, the project could cost $80 billion.

Hagen warned that inaction could be far costlier, with damages potentially running into trillions of dollars globally.
