(Web Desk): The Higher Education Commission of Pakistan (HEC) has made AI course mandatory for all degree programmes directing universities to update curricula.

The Higher Education Commission of Pakistan has officially announced that a three-credit-hour Artificial Intelligence course will be compulsory for all undergraduate and postgraduate degree programmes starting from the 2026 academic session.

The directive applies to both public and private universities across the country. Institutions have been instructed to add the mandatory AI course into their existing curricula without delay.

According to the HEC, every degree programme at undergraduate and postgraduate level must include this three-credit-hour AI course. Universities may offer it as an elective, an interdisciplinary subject, or as a supporting course within the programme structure.

The commission stressed that AI is no longer optional in modern education. It described the move as essential to meet global academic and technological trends.

“In the fast-changing landscape of the 21st century, Artificial Intelligence has emerged as a revolutionary force,” the HEC said.

The HEC added that the goal is to prepare students with practical knowledge and skills to use AI tools effectively in their respective fields. Officials believe this step will improve students’ academic learning and professional growth.

Education experts say this decision could reshape higher education in Pakistan. Students from medical, engineering, business, and arts backgrounds will now have exposure to AI concepts.

This change signals a shift toward technology-driven education. It may help Pakistani graduates compete internationally. However, universities will need proper planning and trained faculty to make the policy successful.
