In a proud moment for Pakistan squash, Ashab Irfan advanced to the final of the Jones Creek Open 2025, a $12,000 international squash tournament being held in the United States. Ashab secured his place in the final after a tough 53-minute battle where he beat Brazil’s Diogo Gobbi 3-1, with game scores of 11-7, 14-12, 4-11, and 11-5.

However, it was a disappointing day for Pakistan’s top-seed Asim Khan. He was unexpectedly defeated by Malaysia’s Nathan Chua in the other semi-final, losing 3-1 in a close contest with scores of 11-9, 4-11, 11-7, and 11-9.

Earlier in the tournament, both players had put on a great show. In the quarterfinals, Ashab crushed Mexico’s Cesar Segundo in straight games 11-3, 11-8, 11-3, while Asim overcame Egypt’s Omar El Kattan 3-1.

Both had also performed well in the earlier rounds with Ashab defeating the USA’s Christopher Gordon in just 20 minutes and Asim beating Egypt’s Kareem Badawi in 45 minutes.

Other Pakistani players, including Ahsan Ayaz and Muhammad Huzaifa Ibrahim, were eliminated earlier. Ahsan lost a tight five-game match to Omar El Kattan, and Huzaifa was defeated by Brazil’s Diogo Gobbi in the round of 16.

Pakistan has a rich squash history with legends like Jahangir Khan and Jansher Khan. Young players like Ashab Irfan are now working to bring that glory back on the international stage.
