The FIFA World Cup 2026 group stage is nearing its conclusion, and the knockout bracket is becoming clearer with more teams securing places in the Round of 32. The first knockout round will begin on June 28 and continue until July 3.
Under the tournament's expanded 48-team format, the top two teams from each of the 12 groups qualify automatically. They are joined by the eight best third-placed teams to complete the 32-team knockout lineup.
After the Round of 32, the competition will move to the Round of 16, followed by the quarterfinals, semifinals, the third-place playoff and the final on July 19.
FIFA has also introduced a major change to the group-stage tie-breaker rules. For the first time in World Cup history, head-to-head results are being used before overall goal difference to separate teams level on points.
If teams remain tied, FIFA will consider head-to-head goals scored, overall goal difference, total goals scored, disciplinary record and finally the latest FIFA World Rankings.
