The famous photo showing Lionel Messi holding baby Lamine Yamal has officially been confirmed as genuine by UNICEF. The confirmation came just days before the 2026 FIFA World Cup final, bringing new attention to the remarkable image.
The picture first went viral after Lamine Yamal’s father shared it on social media in 2024. Many people questioned whether the image was authentic or created using artificial intelligence.
UNICEF explained that the photo was taken in 2007 during a charity calendar project organised with Barcelona and the Catalan newspaper Diari Sport. At that time, Messi was only 20 years old and took part in the campaign to support children’s causes.
According to UNICEF, Yamal’s family entered a raffle and six-month-old Lamine was randomly selected for the photoshoot. The campaign paired Barcelona players with local babies to raise money for children’s welfare projects.
Nobody involved in the event imagined that nearly two decades later, both Messi and Yamal would become global football stars. They also never expected the two players to meet as rivals in the 2026 FIFA World Cup final.
“The photographer, Joan Monfort, has said that Lamine Yamal stole Messi’s heart because he was always smiling,” said UNICEF Catalan’s Laia Ruich. The statement has added even more emotion to the already popular story.
Photographer Joan Monfort described the image as a “true miracle of destiny.” Messi also reacted to the picture, calling it “crazy” and praising Yamal by saying he is “one of the best in the world” and is “rising up.”
Messi and Yamal faced each other for the first time at senior international level on July 19. Spain defeated Argentina 1-0 to win the 2026 FIFA World Cup title in a memorable final.
Yamal’s father, Mounir Nasraoui, shared the photo in 2024 with the caption, “The beginning of two legends.” The post quickly spread across social media as football fans admired the incredible connection between the two stars.
Messi has served as a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador since 2010. This year, Yamal also became UNICEF’s newest Goodwill Ambassador and is using his growing influence to support children’s rights around the world.

“Playing football gave me structure, a sense of belonging, and hope for the future. I know how important it is for children to have a safe place to play, so that they can simply enjoy being children, discovering the world, imagining and growing,” Yamal said in June.
